Many people join our gym with the goal of losing weight, and think the only way to do that is through cardio – treadmill, bike, etc. But is this ideal, what about those dumbbells?
Research has shown that cardiovascular exercise burns more calories per session than lifting weights. The number of calories burnt depends on what exercise is performed, the duration and also the weight of the individual.
Generally speaking, the more you weigh, the more calories you will burn each session.
However, weight training has its place. Although it may not burn as many calories per session as cardio, it is far more effective at building muscle. Muscle burns more calories than fat when you are at rest. Research also shows that you will continue to burn calories for the hours following your weight training session. Over time it also increases your metabolism, which means that you will burn more calories throughout the day.
In conclusion, research suggests that a combination of cardiovascular exercise and weight training may give the best results. We always suggest that once you have completed your warm up, that you lift weights before doing cardio, so you aren’t worn out when it comes to lifting weights. Alternatively separate your workout to have cardio days and weight training days. However, just remember that you will need to be in a calorie deficit to lose weight regardless of what exercise you do.
