People have busy lives – work, children, cooking, cleaning, not to mention a social life occasionally. There are numerous things competing for our time and as a result, sometimes the one thing that gives is sleep. However, sleep is important, the NHS states that ‘adults need 7 to 9 hours’ of sleep per night.
Ensuring you get enough sleep is vital if you are going to perform at your best both physically and mentally. Sleep is when your body repairs itself after exercise, it’s during sleep that your body repairs your muscles so they grow back stronger. Lack of sleep will significantly impact your ability to build muscle! Good sleep also benefits your immune system, that too needs to repair itself whilst you sleep.
Sleep is also important for weight loss. Certain research has suggested that those people who sleep less are more likely to be susceptible to weight gain. Research also suggests that those who sleep well are likely to consume less calories than those that don’t.
Sleep is also when your body’s blood pressure can regulate itself and therefore can lower the risk of heart disease.
It’s not just physical, a regular good night sleep can help prevent depression. Good quality sleep has also been found to help people with social interactions, maintaining relationships, feeling positive and controlling impulses.
So next time you think you might squeeze in another episode on Netflix before bed, don’t. Sleep is important so that your body can repair and be fit and ready for the next day!
