Should women lift weights?
This is the question we get asked most often in the gym. There is a fear that lifting weights will result in bulking up and looking masculine.
This just isn’t true, the female body does not have enough testosterone for this to happen, so unless you’re taking banned substances you have nothing to worry about! Lifting weights is hugely beneficial, for men as well as women. Here are just a few reasons you should be strength training.
When you lift weights, you build lean muscle. The more lean muscle you have, the faster your metabolism. The faster your metabolism, the more calories you burn, resulting in greater fat loss.
Lifting weights has also been shown to improve your mood and reduce stress levels.
You will get stronger. Whilst men will bulk up, women have around 10% of the testosterone men have, so will develop muscle tone without bulking.
Weight training is also good for your bones. It will help increase bone density and strengthen your connective tissue, which helps with injury prevention and can reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
Finally, it can also reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes.
So, what are you waiting for, get lifting! If you don’t know where to start, just ask one of us and we’ll be happy to help. Whilst it may appear a little daunting, we’ll ensure you are lifting safely and we’ll start with light weights!
