You've joined the Gym, WHAT NEXT?

January has seen an influx of new members joining us and has maybe focused the minds of some existing members to come to the gym a bit more often! It’s a new year and people are motivated to lose weight and get in shape.

We are often asked, how many days per week should I come to the gym? Some new members want to come every day, assuming that will help them achieve their goals more quickly. That’s great, but it does come with a little health warning. Losing weight, building muscle, getting stronger, it all takes time! You also need to give your body time to repair and recover, rest days are just as important as gym days.

We obviously think the gym is great but don’t let it take over your life! It needs to be something that forms part of your healthy lifestyle, that is always present, not just a fad. The best way of making the gym a habit is to take small incremental steps. Set realistic targets, attend 3-4 times per week, not every single day. To lose weight in a healthy sustainable way, you should aim to lose around two pounds per week. It’s all about consistency, something you can keep up long term, not just for a few weeks or months. If you do that, you will see results.

Make coming to the gym a habit, something that you just do. There will be good workouts and bad workouts, but if you are consistently attending the gym that doesn’t matter. People who have formed new healthy habits and stick with them, will achieve the best and most long-lasting results. As we always say, it’s a lifestyle not a fad.
